The Chair of Computational Linguistics carries out research on the automatic analysis of Polish texts, with a particular focus on vocabulary analysis and the development of computational dictionaries. The research is concentrated in three main areas:
- The Polish Inflectional Dictionary – the core tool for text processing is the inflectional dictionary, a programme that converts a word’s textual form (e.g. psa) into its base form (pies) and assigns grammatical characteristics (e.g. masculine animate noun).
- The Polish Semantic Dictionary – a word identified via the inflectional dictionary can be semantically interpreted using a relational description stored in the semantic dictionary. These relations define the connectivity of the given meaning with other meanings, such as paradigmatic relations (subordinate – superordinate: pies – zwierzę; dog – animal) and syntagmatic relations (e.g. action: pies – szczekać, merdać; dog – to bark, to wag).
- The Experimental Lexical Network of the Polish Language – this is a natural dictionary of lexical dependencies obtained through a cyclic experiment (conducted between 2011–2014) based on human associative mechanisms. The experiment involved 900 participants. The resulting knowledge of natural associations is reflected in the experimental lexical network. In addition to statistical data, the team has tools for qualitative analysis of relationships between lexemes – nodes in the network (Gatkowska, 2017).
